Abstract |
Parental leave is one of the most popular policies for promoting postpartum career continuation for mothers. Drawing on micro data from the Japanese population census, we evaluated the long-run impact of taking parental leave on maternal employment, using as natural experiments the parental leave reforms of 1992 and 1995. We found that both of these reforms increased fulltime employment while decreasing part-time employment in the long-run. Our results suggest the reforms unambiguously strengthened the labor market attachment of mothers, allowing those who would otherwise engage in part-time work after childbirth to continue in full-time positions.
