Abstract We analyze how an economy should adjust the entry and exit of firms in the face of changes in population growth. In particular, we consider interaction with labor market frictions. To this end, we build a standard Diamond-Mortensen-Pissarides search and matching model, extended to accommodate population growth. We show how a decline in population growth, driven by either a decrease in birth rate or an increase in death rate, affects the social planner's decisions on vacancy creation and separation. We also characterize the relationship between the social planner's solution and the market equilibrium.
