"Early childhood education and care: effects after half a century and their mechanisms" by Hikaru Kawarazaki (ex-CREPE trainee) has been published in Journal of Population Economics
This study of Japanese data from the 1960s to 1980s shows that enrolling in early childhood education and care (ECEC) has a positive, long-term impact on wage and income. Enrolling in ECEC appears to lead to further investments into human capital by increasing the likelihood of college completion. College completion increases wages, which, in turn, increases income. The effect is larger for women for their initial lower college completion rates and wages.

"Social capital building interventions and self-reported post-disaster recovery in Ofunato, Japan" by Professor Yasuyuki Sawada (coauthored with Juheon Lee, Daniel P. Aldrich, Emi Kiyota, Tanaka Yasuhiro) has been published online Scientific Reports
Using a survey of over 1000 residents of Ofunato, Japan after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, this study demonstrates that the individuals who actively participated in "Ibasho house," a community center—created for and led by neighborhood elders— reported higher levels of family and neighborhood recovery than similar individuals who did not participate. Community‑based programs that strengthen social ties even among elderly residents can measurably improve their recoveries.

"COVID-19 Vaccination Mandates and Vaccine Uptake" by Professor Hitoshi Shigeoka (coauthored with Alexander Karaivanov, Dongwoo Kim, and Shih En Lu) has been accepted by Nature Human Behaviour
We evaluate the impact of government-mandated proof of vaccination requirements for access to public venues and non-essential businesses on COVID-19 vaccine uptake. We find that the announcement of a mandate is associated with a rapid and significant surge in new vaccinations (more than 60% increase in weekly first doses), using the variation in the timing of these measures across Canadian provinces in a difference-in-differences approach. Time-series analysis for each province and for France, Italy, and Germany corroborates this finding. Counterfactual simulations using our estimates suggest the following cumulative gains in the vaccination rate among the eligible population (age 12 and over) as of October 31, 2021: up to 5 percentage points (p.p.) for Canadian provinces, adding up to 979,000 first doses in total for Canada (5 to 13 weeks after the provincial mandate announcements), 8 p.p. for France (16 weeks post-announcement), 12 p.p. for Italy (14 weeks post-announcement) and 4.7 p.p. for Germany (11 weeks post-announcement). This paper is widely covered by government agencies such as CDC, and numerous media such as The Economist
