Abstract This course provides an introduction to the political economy of gender. The first half of the course addresses the question of why women are underrepresented in formal political institutions, by exploring the factors that may affect women’s (descriptive) representation. What affects women’s representation? For example, does electoral rule affect women’s representation? If so, how and why? The second half of the course examines the effects of women’s representation. If women are underrepresented, so what? What are the effects of women’s representation? For example, does the gender of politicians affect policies? If so, how and why? Both graduate and undergraduate students are welcome. No prior knowledge is required.
